The teams exchanged fire early in the first quarter, with New Orleans’ outside shooting coming from Ryan, who started in place of Ingram. Detroit briefly found a rhythm after Hayes entered the game, but McCollum steadied the ship and never let the lead slip away. Ryan then capitalized on the space created by Valanciunas attacking Detroit’s paint zone with a three-pointer. Valanciunas also hit from beyond the arc to spark a 14-0 run that gave New Orleans a 23-point lead, 72-49, at halftime.
Detroit, which continued to trade baskets with a lineup led by Cunningham and Hayes, produced the next six points on back-to-back baskets by Marcus Sasser and a breakaway layup by Ivey. Ivey then converted on a fast break layup off a Marvin Begley III blocked shot to close the third quarter with Detroit down by 11, 83-94.
In the fourth quarter, Cunningham and Hayes continued their hot streak, and Ryan cooled things off with a transition three-pointer. The offense came alive, and New Orleans stayed within 10 points. Detroit, facing a four-game losing streak, continued to play its starters.
