How big is Ohtani’s contract?

On December 12,, the official website of Major League Baseball, highlighted the largest free agent contract ever agreed to by Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani agreed to a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Yankees. It was the largest single contract in the history of Major League Baseball and professional sports worldwide.

The previous major league record was the 12-year, $426.5 million extension the Los Angeles Angels signed Mike Trout to in 2019. However, Ohtani’s contract total is a whopping $273.5 million more than Trout’s.

“The difference between Ohtani’s contract and Trout’s is similar to the contract total the Yankees signed Alex Rodriguez to prior to the 2008 season,” noted. At the time, Rodriguez signed a 10-year, $275 million deal with the Yankees. That’s $700 million to pay both a starter and an A-rod for 10 years. Of course, Rodriguez’s contract was signed 15 years ago, so his value is different now. also notes that “The previous highest contract in free agency was Aaron Judge’s nine-year, $360 million deal with the Yankees. Ohtani surpassed that by $340 million. And $340 million is exactly the same as the total value of Fernando Tatis Jr.’s extension with the San Diego Padres prior to the 2021 season (14 years, $340 million).” That’s a lot of money to pay Ohtani to keep Jersey and Tatis on the field at the same time.

Of course, the “true value” of Ohtani’s contract is expected to be much lower than $700 million. This is because Ohtani and the Dodgers decided to “defer” a large portion of his salary. Since the value of money depreciates over time, there is some speculation that the true value of Ohtani’s contract could be around $500 million. 월카지노

The Dodgers gave a historic contract to Ohtani, who won’t be on the mound until 2024. It will be interesting to see if Ohtani can perform as well over the course of his contract as Trout and Rodriguez or Judge and Tatis.
