The United Arab Emirates (UAE), led by former South Korean national soccer team coach Paulo Bento, started the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qatar Asian Cup challenge smoothly with a multi-score victory.

The UAE defeated Hong Kong 3-1 in their first Group C match at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar on the 14th (local time).

The UAE, with three points, is second in the group behind Iran, which beat Palestine 4-1 in the ensuing match.

UAE has been led by Bento, who led South Korea to the round of 16 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, since July last year.

UAE took the lead in the 34th minute with Sultan Adil Alamiri’s penalty kick.

Hong Kong’s Chan Shugwan scored the equalizer in the 49th minute of the second half, but UAE led again with a side sultan’s goal three minutes later, and Yahia Algasani scored a penalty kick in the second half to make the victory.
